A cold day in...

A day above freezing with sunshine would be nice. How about a day with highs in the 20's.  At this point anything above 0 Fahrenheit at night any thing above the teens in the day would be a good start.

I complain so much in the winter I almost forget to post the good.  Today, although in the teens was a nice day.  And if you could stand where the snow was off the ground it almost felt warm, and the snow did start to melt on the south side of the house.
Spring may be far away, hope is here now!

Micro climate on the southside slowly melting away the snow.

A cactus sees the light.

Agave utahensis kaibabensis, I've been putting a towel over it at night.

Echinocereus reichenbachii v. albispinus, hiding in a snow cave.

My biggest Yucca faxoniana, with cold damage.

Echinocereus fendleri

Echinocereus mojavensis

Echinocereus triglochidiatus v. inermis

A small pissed off Yucca rostrata that I should have covered from the snow.

Yucca rostrta, top turning yellow

Yucca elata, looking fine

J-tree, Yucca brevifolia, looking fine

Yucca elata, looking good.

Thin leaved Yucca rostrata, some frost damage.

  1. We've had daytime temps now in the mid 70's for a few days. Hopefully, you will too and the last of your snow will melt! :-)

    1. That would be nice! Thanks!

70's that is awesome, glad you are having some nice weather. It will happen soon enough here, but never soon enough for me. lol

  2. Good eye, Aaron! Yes, the yucca is at about 5,000 feet. I'm anxious to see more of them this spring!

  3. Just back from Denver...1st days 20's highs in town, teens at 8000'. Wed-Fri 55-60F in town, and now it's trying to go above avg here. But one presentation I saw about a resort project S of Grand Jct CO (not enough yuccas) noted they were <32F for almost 40 days straight...never happened before. It sounds like only below Las Vegas and Abq was spared the worst, but it was chilly for here. Saw 0-5F lows in Cochise County AZ all over, I was 2F-ish.

Hoping for a slow warm-up for you, so the plants rebound...a fast warming trend could damage. You might still be allright!

    1. Thanks David! I think most of my plants will be ok.

Crazy weather here and what you said about Cochise County. My nieghbors had 3, 5, 7F in a row, but now they said it's been almost 70 there. ha!

I noticed Deming NM got down to 5f, do you think any palms are left in that town?

    2. "Grand jct". Now there's a place yuccas would love! Too bad they have not caught on yet!

    3. All our palms are OK here, still, so I think Deming's will be OK. Las Cruces only got to 22F, El Paso 24F...lucky!

One person I know had a friend on the outskirts of Tucson with 8F low, Civano Nursery on Houghton Rd 12F, Scott Calhoun 14F nearby.

Some in GJT use tree yuccas, but not many. That resort is in Gateway, which is on the Dolores River, closer to Moab UT. Couldn't verify their claim, but much of the intermtn west was hit....Moab and Grand Jct hit hard, but Bullfrog UT like Abq - 3+ days <32 was all.

    4. David,
      Thanks for the update.
